CHAPTER 9

The smell of strawberry and vanilla was so strong that I could taste it on my tongue. I loved that scent and was always happy to wake up to it. I pulled my covers up over my shoulders as a hand slipped around my waist. My eyes snapped open and I focused on the picture in my room.

“Good morning,” Sinn said.

I turned over. “Morning?”

“You have been unconscious for almost fifteen hours, Bree.”

“What?” my brain seemed hazy, and it took me a few seconds to recall the fight with Ravana and the strange temple in the warehouse.

“Whatever you unleashed on Ravana completely depleted you.”

I remembered Ravana exploding into some macabre jigsaw puzzle. “What happened to her?”

“She broke apart and was consumed by the statue. I have seen nothing like that. It was like she had disintegrated. Not even a piece of fabric remained.”

I pursed my lips. “And the temple?”

“The statue exploded when Ravana died. It was linked to her. I am guessing if we kill the Dark God’s messenger, we will imprison him again.”

“I hope so. Have you heard from your father? Did he find Gulath?” I asked.

“No, he could not locate my brother. He is no longer sure Gulath is in the Underworld. My brother has likely returned to the human realm,” Sinn said.

“Is there any chance the Dark God is here? Are we sure he is in the Underworld?”

“You destroyed his temple here. While Gulath isn’t confined to the Underworld, the Dark God is. At least until he creates another temple here or merges the worlds.”

I sighed. My covers were so warm and comforting. Still, I felt like I was missing something, forgetting something important. “I guess we are going to the Underworld.”

Sinn kissed my cheek. “We are, but not before you visit Chloe and Linda. She is cooking breakfast, and it smells amazing.”

I blinked several times. My daughter was on the brink of death in the next room. I hadn’t seen my best friend in what seemed like forever, yet I had to force the words from my mouth. “I should get dressed and check on Chloe. Tell Linda I will be down in a bit.”

Sinn rolled out of bed and pulled on a pair of black jeans and a white t-shirt as I went to my closet. I flipped through my clothes, looking for a thin cotton sweater. I grabbed it off the hanger and went to my dresser. After grabbing a pair of jeans I hadn’t put on in two years; I grabbed a lacy pair of undergarments.

In my mind, I knew I should rush to Chloe’s side, but I dressed slowly, as if this were any other Sunday and time was in abundance. Had that explosion blown out my emotions? I just felt... nothing.

I went to Chloe’s room and stopped at the door. My daughter had black veins crossing her face and her breathing was labored, but she had a pink hue to her skin that hadn’t been there the last time I saw her.
